Roxboro Community School

Student Council Constitution

Preamble:

This constitution was written by Roxboro Community School students for our benefit. This document will establish a student government that will organize student activities and serve as a means of communication between students and administration. This organization will encourage active participation in all levels of school life by involving students in activities.

 Article I Student Council Officers

The student council will include a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer. Each grade will have two representatives regardless of size. *( representative to board)*

The term for each of these offices is to be one year.

 Section 1 Duties of President:

  1. Preside over meetings

  2. Represent the council at public affairs.

  3. Call meetings when necessary.

  4. Plan meeting agendas with the help of vice president.

 Section 2 Duties of Vice President:

  1. Perform all duties of the president in his/her absence.

  2. Assist in presiding over meetings.

  3. Work with both the president and other members to achieve goals.

  4. Plan meeting agendas with President    

 Section 3 Duties of Secretary:

  1. Keeps minutes of all meetings.

  2. Keeps copies of agendas for reference.

  3. Takes notes at each meeting to be made available to other members and faculty.

 Section 4 Duties of Treasurer:

  1. The Treasurer will keep a record of all financial transactions involving the activities of the student council.

  2. Will be in charge of totaling all proceeds from events funded or sponsored by the Student Council.

 Section 5 Duties of Representatives:

  1. Bring any concerns/ideas of their classmates before the council

  2. Be responsible for their grades participation in school events.

  3. Two representatives for each grade level regardless of size.

 Article II Qualifications for Office:

The qualifications to run for the above mentioned offices are listed below according to their corresponding office.

 Section 1 Qualifications for President:

  1. Must have a C average or above in all classes.

  2. Must be an active member of the student body.

  3. No disciplinary action (suspension, detention).

  4. Must be a sophomore (or highest ranking class at that time).

  5. Ability to commit time and energy to the Student Council and its activities.

  6. Must have four faculty recommendations.

 Section 2 Qualifications for Vice President:

  1. Must have a C average or above in all classes.

  2. Active member of the student body.

  3. No disciplinary action (suspension, detention)

  4. Must be either a freshman or sophomore (highest and second highest ranking class at that time)

  5. Ability to devote time and energy to the Student Council.

  6. Must have three faculty recommendations.

 Section 3 Qualifications for Secretary:

  1. Must have a C average or above in all classes.

  2. Must have a recommendation from English teacher.

  3. Must be proficient in English both written and oral.

  4. Active member of the student body.

  5. Must be either an eighth grader, ninth grader, or tenth grader.

  6. Must have two/three faculty recommendations.

 Section 4 Qualifications for Treasurer:

  1. Must have a C or above in all classes.

  2. Must have math teacher’s recommendation.

  3. Must be proficient in math skills.

  4. active member of student body.

  5. Must be an eighth, ninth, or tenth grader.

  6. Must have two/three faculty recommendations.

 Section 5 Qualifications for Representatives

  1. Must have a C or above average in four out of six classes.

  2. Must have two faculty recommendations

  3. Must be an active member of student body.

 Article III Failure to Uphold Responsibilities

Failure to uphold the above mentioned responsibilities in Article I will result in:

1. A verbal warning first.

2. Probation for one marking period.

3. Removal from office.

 Article IV Voting and Election Procedures:

The following procedures will be instated during each election. They are intended to protect the individual’s voting rights.

 Section 1 Procedures for Voting and Elections

1. For the first year, elections will be held on March 23, 2007. Each year after elections will be held in the last week of May.*************

2. Each candidate is to turn in a petition with twenty-five student signatures and four teacher signatures.

3. The candidate with the majority of votes is the winner, if a tie occurs, another election will be held between the two candidates who tied.

4. If a student council member should have to vacate his/her post during their elected year, a special election will be held.

 Article V Meeting Procedures

Meetings will be left to the discretion of the current Student Council. However, the council must meet at least once a month. A schedule of meetings should be made available to all members and the faculty advisor. The President or faculty advisor has the right to call emergency meetings.

 Article VI Maintenance of the Constitution

This constitution will be effective immediately upon approval of the principal and faculty. All amendments must be approved by 2/3 of the student council and faculty along with the principal’s approval. However, the amendments may not dramatically change the foundation of this constitution.
