SPECIAL BOARD MEETING SLATED

There will be a special called meeting of the Roxboro Community School Board of Directors on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 4:30 p.m. in the RCS board room. Personnel matters will be discussed.  A brief closed session will be held following the opening of the meeting. There will be an executive committee meeting after the regular called meeting, to set the agenda for the regular board meeting, which will be held on Monday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. in the RCS Library.

LOBBY FLOOR SPRUCED UP OVER CHRISTMAS BREAK

During the Christmas break, Person County artist George (Bucky) Buchanan worked diligently to spruce up the floor of the main lobby at RCS. Principal Sam Kennington said, when he returned to lead the school again in October, finishing the floor was a main priority for him. He said he wanted the school crest incorporated into the art work, and, after a discussion with Buchanan, a Fibonacci circle was added to finish off the main lobby floor. The Fibonacci sequence begins with the numbers 0 and 1, and each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two.

SPRING SPORTS MEETINGS

There will be mandatory Spring Sports Meetings on Tuesday, January 31. The middle school meeting will be at 6 p.m. and the high school meeting will be at 7 p.m.  Both meetings will be held in the new dining hall.  It is very important that those planning to participate in spring sports attend one of the meetings. Those who can’t attend must see Coach Tuck.

ELKS LODGE HELPS RCS BAND PURCHASE EQUIPMENT

Members of the Roxboro Elks Lodge paid a visit to Roxboro Community School this week, to see what their support had produced.

Through the work of its members, the lodge donated $2,000 to the RCS band, which was used to purchase equipment.

John Bullock, chair of the Roxboro Elks, said the members were “looking for something in the community to donate to,” and the Gratitude Grant seemed to be a perfect fit for RCS.

In order to be able to donate the money, each member of the Roxboro lodge had to contribute $4.50 to the Elks National Foundation.

According to the Web site, www.elks.org, the organization realizes “each community has different needs. Elks National Foundation Gratitude Grants allow [l]odges to directly address their local needs. Gratitude Grants offer an opportunity for Elks to think about how best to serve their community and make it stronger.”

Band Director Eric Swanson said this week, “On behalf of RCS bands, color guard and Band Boosters, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. John Bullock and all the members of Roxboro Elks Lodge No. 2005 for their generous donation to our program. Their donation helped our program purchase drum heads, mallets and sticks, and guard equipment for our 2011-12 school year and marching show. Thank you for all you have done for us and the community.”
