Our 2023 Teacher of the Year is Mr. Dennis Abline! Mr. Abline has been a World History teacher at RCS for four years and is responsible for starting our Europe trips for students, staff and families. High school principal Darkarai Bryant talked about how Abline has made an “immediate impact” on students, families, and staff by providing the opportunity to travel abroad. “He gets his kids to learn and want to learn at high levels,” Bryant said when speaking about the “Epic Rap Battles” Abline’s students participated in this year, a project that the students and teachers loved. Bryant also shared that 100% of Abline’s students passed their AP exam a couple years ago, which is hard to do. Abline shared that he has always had a passion for history and young people, so teaching has felt like a natural fit. “I really don't know what I would be doing if I were not teaching,” he said. As for helping with the trips abroad, Abline shared he enjoys giving people the opportunity to travel, noting that the trips fit his World History curriculum perfectly. “It is a passion of mine to travel and I appreciate the opportunity of getting students and parents on board with it. For some, this is their first time in another country/culture.” Abline said that being named the Teacher of the Year is a great honor and privilege. “I really don't feel worthy of this honor,” Abline said. “I make mistakes on a daily basis, but what helps me in my profession is that I am surrounded by so many others that I admire and look to for guidance and input. The honor has been given to me but really it is a team award, the people that work beside me have made me into the teacher I am today.” Thank you for all you do for RCS, Mr. Abline!

We also celebrated our other retiring teachers and staff. EC teacher, Barbara Walters, eighth grade Language Arts teacher Sara Morrow, and Public Information Officer and Communications teacher, Phyliss Boatwright. Each of them have left their marks on students, parents and faculty in their time at RCS. We are grateful for them and what they have done to make our school better. We will miss them.
